All, Humans

All, Humans is a set of 3 permanent art installations at the School of Linguistics and Cultural Studies, Goethe University, Frankfurt, conceived in collaboration with Raqs Media Collective. Beyond Design led the architectural exploration, developing the forms that resulted in three unique sculptural installations, including luminous canopies. These canopies create sheltered zones for communal gathering and introspection, integrating spatial, structural, and visual elements to respond to the architecture of each location.

Inspired by the Vai language of West Africa, the installations pay homage to the development of human languages and the richness of linguistic expression. Each of the three sculptures—located in the entrance foyer, central atrium, and library—is carefully adapted to its site, shaping the spatial experience and engaging with the surrounding architecture. The installations create immersive environments that encourage reflection, dialogue, and the shared exploration of language.

The design employs variable pixel pitch LED technology intricately intertwined with custom-designed metal frames to support the sculptures. The canopies are visible and engaging from all directions, presenting projections of historic Vai characters across their surfaces. Electric shamiyana patterns add layers of visual texture, enhancing the sense of depth and creating a dynamic interaction between form, light, and movement.

Through this project, Beyond Design translated the abstract qualities of language into spatial and sculptural form. The installations are simultaneously functional, providing sheltered gathering spaces, and expressive, celebrating the evolution of written communication.

By merging architectural rigor with artistic collaboration, the project demonstrates how thoughtful design can create environments that are at once intellectually engaging, visually compelling, and socially resonant.
