The building’s massing takes its cues directlyfrom the surrounding streetscape. The rear elevation aligns with theneighbouring terrace, while the front steps back in response to the adjoiningbuilding line. The proportions and bay widths draw from those of thesurrounding houses, establishing a familiar rhythm while giving the newbuilding a distinctly contemporary expression.
A two-tone palette of warm red and light buffbrick breaks down the elevation and reflects the material character of thearea. Soft bronze-green horizontal bands, window surrounds and metalworkintroduce a contrasting layer of detail, giving the building its own identitywhile maintaining a strong relationship with its residential context.
Whitton Avenue East demonstrates how carefullyconsidered infill development can make better use of constrained urban siteswhile contributing positively to the character of an established neighbourhood.
At Beyond Design, we see these overlooked sitesas an opportunity to deliver much-needed new homes without losing the qualitiesthat make London’s residential streets distinctive. Through proportion,materiality and considered massing, the project balances density with a senseof permanence, character and place.
